The Difference Between Meerkat vs Periscope

Since the launch of Meerkat on Feb 27th and Periscope on March 26th (after the Twitter acquisition) we have been watching live streams almost everyday to learn, listen, watch, and really understand the psychology of people on these new live stream apps as its part of the social media ecosystem and infrastructure being tied to Twitter.

The beauty of new apps especially ones like Meerkat vs. Periscope which provide a real time live stream view of each person you may follow on Twitter is you get to really see the “personality” behind the Twitter handle. One of the big draws of jumping on the bandwagon early on an app is to get attention and establish yourself as an early “leader” of a social platform “in case” it takes off.

We have put together a list of some of the major differences we have seen and have listened to on these apps that we found really interesting.

Top 9 Differences Between Meerkat vs. Periscope from a viewer perspective

  • Meerkat from the get go hooked people in with a Leaderboard gaming effect. People on the leaderboard seem to have a daily need to live stream to stay on the leaderboard and move up the leaderboard if they can. And some just have it in there DNA to be in front of a camera and talk their brains out.
  • With Meerkat people get to see who replied in a meerkat stream on Twitter unless they turn off the comments which many don’t.
  • Meerkat seems to have more of a community and we think that is because of the leaderboard effect especially with the mainstream using Periscope more.
  • Periscope is more random and people jump in and out of Periscopes faster but that could be because there are more people using Periscope without worrying about moving up a leaderboard.
  • Periscope has the “bought by Twitter” effect and even many first live streamers on Meerkat jumped to Periscope right away and claimed its “dead” until finding themselves back on Meerkat a day or two later either overwhelmed by trolls or missing the leaderboard and more tight knit community.
  • Periscope is being used a lot more by celebrities, journalists, and media. this could be why
  • Periscope lets viewers keep tapping the screen to fill it up with hearts vs Meerkat offers a one tap RT/Fav button again tied to Twitter.
  • Periscope seems to win when talking about Fridges and the Troll effect vs. Meerkat since again we really see Meerkat only being used mostly by leaderboard users on a daily to weekly basis they either already had a community built up on Twitter or are building one now on Meerkat. (building a community on Meerkat seems easier then Periscope)
  • “Quality Content” is in the eye of the beholder. If there are 200 viewers of a model in a thong vs 5 people watching a DJ the value is being decided by the viewers of each stream otherwise they wouldn’t be watching.

Update: VentureBeat produced this recent chart (April 23rd, 2005) although they have top users wrong and switched since Madonna used Meerkat once and hit top of the Meerkat leaderboard.
